Athena

Athena's Peplos For our August High Day this year we decided to honor Athena as she had made herself known to us at Wellspring. Athena's feast day is the Panathenaia and was held during our month of August. Traditionally a peplos for the staue of Athena was made and processed through the streets of Athens to the Acropolis. We don't have a statue of Athena (yet) but we did make a peplos. It didn't end up with yellow and blue on it which was traditional but it did have the right shape. Or it would have if a more drapey fabric had been used, but we will know better for next year! It does have a girdle and pins to hold the shoulders though.

Owl Bead Of course we had takeaways like we do for every ritual. This time we made owl beads for everyone as it was an owl that Athna used to maker herself known to us. The beads are molded from white and transparent polymer clay marbled together to mimic alabaster or a similar stone, then lightly antiqued to show the details. They were finished with copper wire and large green seed beads.
